Graduate Schemes 2027: Deadlines, Dates and How to Apply

    The MyPathfinder Team6 min read

If you want to start a graduate scheme in September 2027, the application window is open now, and for some of the best-known schemes it closes within weeks. Here are the dates that matter, how rolling deadlines really work, and what to do if a scheme doesn't come through.

Dates checked on 21 October 2026. Employers can change dates or close early, so always confirm on the employer's own careers site.

When do graduate schemes open for 2027?

Most large employers opened applications for 2027 entry between August and September 2026. Searches for graduate schemes in the UK peak every October, according to Google Trends, which tells you when everyone else is applying too.

That timing catches people out. Final-year students are applying in the first term of their final year, often before they have settled into it. Recent graduates sometimes don't realise the window for the next intake has already opened.

Which graduate scheme deadlines are coming up?

These are the published dates for some of the biggest UK schemes:

    Scheme Closes Notes
NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme 28 October 2026, 11:30am Starting salary £31,276, rising to £33,681 after 12 months. Starts September 2027 (Opportunities for Youth)
HSBC Global Graduate Programme 30 or 31 October 2026, depending on programme Investment banking and markets close first (CareerTestPrep)
J.P. Morgan London analyst programmes 1 November 2026 for many programmes Some rolling elements (CareerTestPrep)
Civil Service Fast Stream 5 November 2026, midday Window opened 8 October (Civil Service Careers)
Lloyds Banking Group (several programmes) 6 to 8 November 2026 Some Lloyds programmes have already closed (CareerTestPrep)
Big Four: PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG Rolling Places fill as strong applicants come through (CareerTestPrep)
Teach First Training Programme Rolling Register interest now (CareerTestPrep)

What does a rolling deadline mean?

It means the employer assesses applications as they arrive and closes the scheme, or a particular location or business area, once it has enough people. The date on the advert is the latest it could close, not the date it will.

In practice, applying in October gives you a much better chance than applying in January for the same scheme. If a scheme you want is rolling, treat "open" as "apply this month".

How many graduate schemes should you apply for?

Fewer than you think, done properly. There were 141 applications for every graduate role in 2026, rising to 172 in London (ISE). Recruiters reading that volume can spot a copied-and-pasted application in seconds.

A shortlist of five to ten schemes, each researched and tailored, beats thirty generic applications. Pick schemes where you can answer clearly why you want that employer and that programme, and match your examples to the skills they say they assess.

What does a graduate scheme application involve?

The stages vary, but most follow a similar pattern:

    1. Online application. Your CV, education and a few short questions on motivation.
    2. Online tests. Situational judgement, numerical or verbal reasoning. Practise the format first, as the tests are timed.
    3. Video interview. Usually recorded, with a short time to answer each question.
    4. Assessment centre. Group exercises, a presentation or case study, and a final interview.

Employers are also changing how they assess candidates because of AI. In the same ISE survey, 92% of employers suspected or had confirmed candidates misusing AI in tests and interviews, and 77% were redesigning recruitment as a result, with more live and in-person assessment (ISE). Written answers still matter, but expect to be tested on the same points face to face.

How do you prepare for graduate scheme interviews?

Most scheme interviews are competency or strength based. You will be asked for examples of times you worked in a team, solved a problem or handled pressure, and how you approached them.

Prepare five or six strong examples from your course, part-time work, societies or volunteering, and practise telling each one in under two minutes. Our guide to how UK employers actually score interview answers explains what assessors listen for, and MyPathfinder's Interview Simulator lets you rehearse with Elise, our AI interviewer, before the real thing.

What if you miss the deadline or don't get a place?

Then you are in the same position as most graduates, and there is a bigger market waiting. Graduate schemes are a small slice of first jobs. In July 2026, Adzuna counted 8,383 roles advertised as graduate jobs against 192,864 entry-level vacancies (Adzuna).

Entry-level roles are advertised all year, close as soon as employers have enough strong applicants, and rarely use the word graduate. We explain where to find them in our guide to entry-level jobs in the UK. The best approach is to run both tracks at once: a short list of scheme applications this autumn, and a steady weekly flow of entry-level applications alongside.

How do you keep track of every deadline?

Write them down the day you decide to apply. Log the employer, scheme, closing date, whether it is rolling, which CV you sent and where you are in the process. Missing a test deadline because it was buried in an inbox is one of the most common ways candidates drop out.

Our job application tracker checklist lists what to record. MyPathfinder's Application Tracker keeps every scheme, deadline and next step in one place, so nothing closes without you noticing.
